Design Presentation

MXIS Middle School Design Presentation Successfully Concluded Author: Sean Hu Date: November 3, 2017 The design presentation event brought by Tchr. Mitchell and the MXIS Middle School, grade 9 and 10, had finally ended after 3 days of meeting (October 20, September 1 and 2). For the first quarter, students had observed and identify different problems and needs the school and the society have, such as when new students getting lost in MXIS, people having trouble finding books in a library, or children having trouble on division in math. Then with detailed research, they came up with different plans, using guide map apps and educational games to bring all the problems to an end. Through the presentation, students get to have a chance of presenting their ideas to everyone, and to also get a chance to know the idea of others. The coordinator of the design presentation, Tchr. Mitchell, had also planned the event carefully. Students were divided to four groups, each group can ask questions to the presenter and give a score for their presentation, which is an interactive experience for students. Snacks and beverages are also provided for each table, which is a satisfying experience for everyone. Tchr. Mitchell also shared his comments and views on this event: “This school year I introduced computer science lesson in my Design class. It is quite challenging as most students have little or no knowledge about programming. My students did basic block programming lessons using code studio, which teaches everyone who is interested in learning how to code. No experience is required, and it only needs a device with a stable internet connection to begin coding. After learning the basics, the students commenced in doing the first phase of their Design cycle. Students from grade 9 conceptualized a guide app for a place of choice while the grade 10 students designed an educational game for lower school students. A design presentation was done to give a brief overview of what their app would be like. This presentation aims to empower student voice by making their thinking visible and audible. Because most of the times students' ideas are just left on their heads or on their papers. To promote genuine learning and develop 21st century skills, this creativity and critical-thinking project should be seen and heard. Furthermore, collaboration of the students is evident as they provide immediate feedback and comments about each other's individual project. The next phase of this project will be done during the next quarter and hope to finish the apps by January.”
